EGYPT PROJECT
Introduction
In October 2024 , TPC team visited Egypt to help Palestinian Refugees in Cairo and surrounding areas.
The situation of Gaza refugees in Egypt is complex and challenging, particularly during times of intensified conflict in Gaza since October 7th 2023. Here is a summary of the key aspects of the situation:
Historical Context
- Gaza is home to a large Palestinian population, many of whom have been living as refugees since the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1948.
- Over the decades, some Palestinians have sought refuge in neighboring countries like Egypt, especially during periods of escalated violence, but Egypt has been historically reluctant to accept large numbers of Gaza refugees on a permanent basis.
- Due to the Gazans status in Egypt(temporary/short terms visa) , they cannot work or send their children to public schools in Egypt
- Without any funding from UNRWA or any other international governmental agency , the lifeline for many of the refugees are local and international NGOs currently operating in Egypt
Current Refugee Movements
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has forced thousands(estimated around 100,000) of Palestinians to seek safety in Egypt . Majority of this polulation was able to leave Gaza when the Rafah crossing was still open(before May 2024).
Current Challenges
Humanitarian Concerns: The overcrowding and dire conditions within Gaza mean that refugees are in desperate need of basic resources like food, water, and shelter. Egypt's ability to provide relief is constrained by its policies and the complexity of managing large-scale refugee flows.
In summary, Gaza refugees face significant challenges in seeking asylum in Egypt, primarily due to border controls, security concerns, and Egypt's cautious approach to managing refugee flows. Humanitarian efforts are often limited to medical assistance and temporary measures, leaving most refugees in Gaza trapped in worsening conditions.
